Matthew Henry Harris of Shelton, farmer - he had recently taken a farm that was occupied by Mr Peck. When Mr Peck had a sale of his effects on 24 September Peck gave him a parcel of fold stakes. He did not count them or take any particular notice of them. He missed them the following morning, and from what he heard went on Sunday morning to search Button's premises. He found a quantity of fold stakes of the same desciption, concealed under some bean sheaves in his garden. Button admitted they were his and said he was ready to pay anything he might demand of him. He gave the takes into the possession of William Fane. There were 37 stakes, worth 2s. John Gore of Shelton, labourer - Mr Harris had bought him a load of wood at the sale. On Friday evening after he had left his horses he went for the wood. He saw Button with some fold stakes in Mr Harris's field. The stakes were tied together and Button asked him to help him put them on his shoulder. He did so and Button took them away. On Sunday night he told Mr Harris about Button taking them. William Fane of Dean, police constable - he went at Mr Harris's request to search Button's premises. He found a quantity of fold stakes under the bean sheaves in the garden. He took them away with them and gave them to Mr Harris the previous day. Thomas Button - had nothing to say.
