- Scope and ContentI am 34 years of age, was born in Little Massingham in the County of Norfolk an illegitimate child of Sarah Dell by John Berry of Little Massingham, butcher who afterwards married her. He died in 1811. My mother took out a hawker and pedlars licence for me and I went about to fairs and other places until 1817 when I enlisted into the Norfolk Militia and continued in it until 1823 when I was discharged. I then went about again as a hawker and pedlar till just before wheat harvest 1831 when being at Hartford in the County of Huntingdon I was seized with the palsy which deprived me of the use of my limbs and speech. I continued there until February 1832 when the Overseer gave me three shillings. I then came to Bedford and Mr Hurst the surgeon gave me paper to go to the Infirmary there where I have been till the 2nd instant when I was discharged as incurable. I was married in August 1825 at St Michael, Thorne, Norwich in the County of Norfolk to my now wife by whom I have two children - Susan, four years old and John two years and a half , all living at Little Massingham and to the best of my knowledge receiving relief from that parish. My mother died about 4 years ago and she also had relief from that parish. In April 1831 I was living with my family at Harpley in Norfolk about a mile from Little Massingham when my wife and child being ill I sent her to little Massingham for relief and she received five shillings and sixpence from the Overseer and brought it to me at Harpley. In the beginning of December 1831 being at Little Massingham I applied to the Overseers for relief who gave me four shillings and sixpence at different times. I have not done any act since to gain a settlement to the best of my knowledge.
