He did not mean to steal the mug and did not steal it - he took it out and took it back again. He put it in his smock because they would not give him any more beer. He went into another public house and had a pint of beer and then took the mug back. He gave it to Tom Barker who feeds horses that stop at Mr Sleath's. He doesnot work at Mr Sleath's.
