- Scope and ContentI am 23 years of age, was born at Hitchin, Herts where my father then resided but belonged to St Paul, Bedford. When I was 11 years of age my father, myself and three other of his daughters, namely Mary, Emma, and Ann were removed by orders from Hitchin to St Paul. At the age of 15 I went out to service but did not continue in any one place to gain a settlement until August 1826 when I let myself to Mr Samuel Church of Goldington, mealman as a servant of all work at the wages of five pounds per annum. I continued in such service until Michaelmas 1829. About a fortnight before that time I let myself to Mrs Matthews of St Peter, Bedford at the wages of six pounds ten shillings a year. I continued in such service and received my full wages. About three weeks before Michaelmas 1830 I let myself to Mr Church again by the year at the wages of six pounds per annum and went to his service the second day after Michaelmas fair day at Bedford. I continued there about six weeks or two months when being pregnant with child I went into the House of Industry at Bedford and was delivered there of a bastard child. I continued in that house until Easter 1831. During the time I was there Mrs Church called and asked me to come and live with them again on the same terms and wages of six pounds as before. I told her I would and on Easter Tuesday 1831 I went to Mr Church's at Goldington. My Master paid me two shillings a week for the maintenance of my child and three shillings and ninepence at Michaelmas being my full wages at the rate of six pounds per annum to that time when my Master said to me I suppose you continue with us on the same terms and wages to which I agreed and have been there till last Monday four weeks. I have received my full wages to that time being two shillings a week to pay for the maintenance of my child and the balance being 15 shilings at the rate of six pounds a year. I left Mr Church's because I am now pregnant with child.
