David Stredder: on the night of 17 May he was at The Spade public house at Woodside, Caddington. There was a club feast. On leaving about 10 o'clock he was worse for drink, and laid down the side of a house and fell asleep. When he laid down his watch was safe in his pocket. He laid there about an hour and then got up and walked home with James Bunyan, who had come to wake him. About 50 yards from hi house he missed his watch. There went back and made enquiries at the house, but the people said they knew nothing of it. Amos Rowe was there. On the 19 he went to Luton to enquiry of the man he bought it from, as to its number. He told him the number and Stredder reported it to police sergeant Millard. On 22 May, the watch was shown to him by Millard. He identified it as his missing watch. David Holland: on the night of 17 May he was at The Spade public house at Woodside, Caddington. Between 10 and 11 o'clock he saw Stredder lying outside asleep. He saw Amos Rowe sitting close by. They were other people outside but non within 6 or 7 yards. John Millard: on 21 May he went to Amos Rowe whilst he was at work in a field at Chaul End. Rowe told him he was at the club feast and that he had too much to drink and went out and lay on the form outside the house. There was another person there asleep. He said he was a housekeeper for Mr Samms of Tipple Hill. Millard asked him if that person had lost anything and Rowe said a watch. Rowe said he was open to being searched and turned his pockets inside out. Rowe said he had not had a watch for 5 years. Millard asked him if he had a watch pocket and he said he did but had sewn a button over it. Millard examined the pocket and pulled out a watch. Rowe said he did not steal it. The chain and seal were found in Rowe's breeches pocket.
