- Scope and ContentAbout a week or a fortnight before Christmas 1825 my daughter Sarah Wykes was at work with Mrs Kemp in St John. She came home to me and said that her mistress had hired her to wash and iron (if i was agreeable) for a year at 1/- a week and her board and if she stayed more than a twelvemonth she was to have more wages. I went to her mistress who said to me 'I have hired your daughterat 1/- - a week and if she stays with me any more than a year I will advance her wages'. I consented to my daughter going on those termsupon which she went and stayed until christmas following when my mistress increased her wages to fifteen pence a week. My daughter stayed with her mistress during the second year until April 1827 when she was taken ill and left.
