  • Scope and Content
Samuel Barker Kirkby of Caldicot, Northill - 3 weeks or a month ago on Saturday he saw James Jones coming from a ladder placed against an open window to a bedroom on the first floor of his house. He saw Jones place something on a window ledge. He found on going to the place that it was a piece of cold beef about 3 or 4 lbs weight and about half a quartern loaf. Jones went out of his yard "very quick". He went into the house and did not see that anything had been taken except the piece of beef. He went into the barn and accused his man James Jones of taking the meat and bread. Jones denied it. He threatened to go to the police, but did not do so at that time as he thought it hardly worthwhile. About 4 or 5 days ago he mentioned the circumstances to the superintendant Mr Keogh who was calling at his house, and added that he had since missed a razor and 3 silver teaspoons. Mr King enquired who the man was that he had seen in his yard when the beef was lost and said he would search his house. He then described the razor. Mr Keogh sent police constable George Capron to the house and he went with him. George Capron, police constable - he went to James Jones' house at Caldicot with Mr Kirkby and found there the razor, now produced with the maker's name and two marks on the inside of the handle. He also found one silver teaspoon.
