Depositions and examination - John Lett charged with stealing a sack

Charles Dines of Elstow, veterinary surgeon - On Wednesday 16 September he left his gig in the yard of the Quart Pot Public House in Kempston with a sack spread over the cushion of the gig. At 10pm he missed the sack. He does not remember seeing the prisoner that day. The sack now produced is his, marked with his name. John Paviour, constable of Bedford - about 1.30am on the night of Saturday 5 December he met Lett coming into Bedford along the Biddenham Road carrying something on his back in a sack. He felt the sack and asked if Lett had turnips - he said yes, he bought them at Bromham. He said he would detain Lett unless he gave a more satisfactory answer. Lett gave no other account so he took possession of the sack and contents. The sack was turned inside out so that the name could not be seen. It contained 39 or 40 swedish turnips. John Lett - declined to say anything
