Henry Gamble, police constable - the previous night at about 7.15pm he met a man coming from Mr Kirkby's farm at Polehanger towards Shefford with a faggot on his back. He said he was woodman to Mr Pestell at Meppershall Chapel. He watched the man and saw him put the faggot into a lean to near his cottage and then go into the cottage. He followed him in and found it was William Inskip. He acknowledged he worked for Mr Kirkby of Polehanger and that he had stolen the faggot from his master. He took Inskip into custody and left a man in charge of the faggot. When he got back the man and the faggot were gone. He has since found this man was the prisoner's brother. William Inskip - "I hope you will let me off being the first time"
