  • Scope and Content
William Merchant: about a fortnight before Christmas, the prisoner called on him and asked him to lend him 30 shillings. He came again later the same day and had with him a silver watch. He gave Eves 30 shillings, and gave Merchant the watch to hold. Afterwards he asked Eves when he would return the money; he never did bring the money so he kept the watch. Joseph Mantua: on 15 March he was bought a silver watch by William Merchant. It was a watch with particular marking which Mantua knew to be the property of himself and his Uncle Peter Mantua. He had acquired it from Mr Payne. He had not authorised the prisoner to sell the watch and had missed the watch some 4 or 5 months previous.
