Alexander Smith, the male bastard child of Mary Elizabeth Smith, born in the hamlet of Humbershoe, parish of Studham, is living with her in St Mary, Bedford for nurture and is chargeable thereto. William Chapman prays that the chapelwardens and Overseers of the Poor of Humbershoe may be duly summoned to Bedford to show cause (if they can) why an order should not be made upon them for payment for maintenance for so long a time as the said child shouls remain with its mother at the expense of the Parish of St Mary.
