Depositions and examination - James Burnage

Elizabeth Green wife of William Powell Green of Woburn, plasterer - the well hook produced is the property of Ann Haynes of Woburn, who previously lived in the house she now occupies and left the well hook for the use of her husband. She left it by her back door the previous afternoon. About 10.30pm the watchman rapped at their window and asked if the well hook belonged to them. John Sinfield of Woburn, constable - he was on duty about 10.30 the previous night when he met James Burnage at the north end of Woburn nearly opposite Mrs Haynes's house. Burnage had something in his hand. He asked him what sort of weapon he had - Burnage said he had borrowed it. He told him to take it back to where he had borrowed it from, but Burnage went and stood against his father's door. He took the well hook from him. He thought he had it from Green and went there and called at his window. When Green said it was theirs he gave itin at teh window. he took Burnage into custody. When he was putting on handcuffs Burnage kicked him on the head several times and struck him. James Burnage - he went down Crawley to get a stick and he saw the well hook by Green's back door. He took it to stand in his own defence.
