- Scope and ContentOn Saturday 7 November about 7pm the prisoner now calling himself John White came into his shop. He asked for an ounce of tobacco and a pipe which he gave him - he charged 1d for the tobacco and nothing for the pipe. He took a shilling out of his purse which appeared to contain a good deal of silver. He gave White 11d change. He suspected the shilling was not a good one, but as he was in a hurry with several customers waiting he placed it separately. He later examined the shilling and found it to be a bad one. He gave information to John Young the constable. They found White at Mr Partridge's house in Dunstable. White denied knowingly giving him a bad shilling, but said if he had he would give him a good one. He heard something drop from the prisoner. He told him not to throw it away. They took White into the parlour, searched him and found a counterfeit half crown and a counterfeit shilling in his waistcoat pocket. He went back into the shop and searched for what White dropped. He found behind a large roll of paper on which White had sat a bag with a number of pieces in it.
