Depositions of Thomas Phillips, retailer of beer of Potsgrove, in the case of John Galway, accused of stealing a Bearing Rein

Thomas Phillips: on 2 December the prisoner cam e to his beer shop in Sheep Lane, Potsgrove and asked for a pint of beer. He was outside at the time and his wife came to him to say she suspected the man of taking some of his horse tack, which was hanging in the tap room. As Phillips went into the house, the man was about to leave, but seeing him he sat down again. His wife entered and the prisoner said to her that she seemed suspicious of him. Phillips told him they had a right to be suspicious of stranger. Phillips then noticed a bearing rein missing from a harness. He could see the rein in the mans trouser pocket. He accused the prisoner and after several requests he surrendered the rein. The prisoner begged him to let him go and said he would not do it again. Next day he reported the man to Superintendent Young.
