- Scope and ContentI am about 50 years of age, was born in the town of Kelly in the County of Meath, Ireland. In the year 1799 I was married at the dwelling house of the Reverend Stuart King at King's Court in the County of Cavan, to Thomas Smith then in the Bedfordshire Militia. Mr King had been a protestant Minister of the Church of England but excommunicated, yet still retained a privilege from the King to marry and christen people. There were nine or ten other women married at the same time and place, I have always considered myself the wife of Thomas Smith with whom I came to England, and on the 21st February 1811 I was delivered of a son by him at the parish of Littlehampton in the County of Sussex who was christened and registered in the parish books by the name James Smith son of Sergeant Thomas Smith of the Bedfordshire Militia. The said Thomas Smith is now a travelling tinker and I have lived with him ever since.
