Samuel Tompkins - he never struck him once and has nothing else to say. James Tompkins - he was insulted by a Jew in the market. His brother interfered and the Jew wanted to fight him. He tried to prevent it. He laid hold of his brother, but Hampton came up and struck his brother on the head with a stick before saying a word and took his brother by the collar. He asked Hampton to let go. Hampton struck him with his stick. He laid hold of Hampton's stick to try and get it away. Mr Paxton came up, took the stick and struck him 3 or 4 times on the head with it. He broke it and they went on the stall together. Hampton came and took him by the collar again. Two gentlemen came up and said they would answer for him. He never struck Hampton, though he did try to get his brother away.
