    Samuel Kempster of Leighton Buzzard, labourer - on 7 October he was at work for John Shepherd digging potatoes in Leighton Open Field. His master had some onions which had been pulled several days lying to dry. There were several bushels. In the evening he was at the Boot Public House at Leighton - Cosby was there. They had some conversation and he said he would go again and steal some onions from his master and if he liked he could go and see him. He left the public house and followed Corby. Corby went through the hedge by the side of the land where the onions were. He saw him go to the heap of onions belonging to his master. He went to Corby who had three onions in his hand. He asked Corby to give him to him but he refused. He collared him and brought him to the policeman. Jabez Corby - Kempster and he walked down the Back Lane. Kempster went on the land with him and stood by his side while he picked them up. He picked up three and put them in his pocket. Kempster afterwards took him into Mrs Blackburn's house and gave him part of two pints of beer. He had had nothing to eat all day. His father is the hayward and he lives with him.
