- Scope and ContentI am about 45 years of age, was born in the parish of Ridgmont where my father William Chapman resided and belonged and he obtained his settlement in that parish by service. i have served as a soldier for about 15 years in the 40th Regiment of Foot and in the Marines. I have never done any act to gain a settlement in my own right in any other parish having worked as a labourer by the week or day in jobbing work. I have received relief from Mr Morris and the overseers of the poor of the parish of Ridgmont for about a year and a half at the rate of four shillings and sixpence a week - that is 3/6 for myself and one shilling a week for a woman to attend on me having been ill a great length of time. Not signed. Annotated - William Chapman died in November 1828 and the parish of Ridgmont paid all expenses.
