- Scope and ContentJohn Moore, butler to Rt Hon Lord St John at Melchbourn House - within the last 2 or 3 months several dozens of glass bottles have been taken from the bottle rack which stands detached near the housekeeper's room in Melchbourn House. On the night of Thursday 1 October about 11pm he saw someone looking through the window into the still room. He was within about 6 or 8 yards of the window and waited there. The person went towards the bottle rack . He heard the noise of bottles being removed. On going to the spot he saw a man going away - he overtook him with two bottles in his hand and made him take them back to the rack. He then called for a light and on seeing that the person was Robert Cannell let him go. Two other bottles were found near the spot where he overtook the prisoner. The value of the 4 bottles is 8d. Robert Cannell of Melchbourne - he did not know what he was doing as he was drunk.
