- Scope and ContentWilliam Balls of Houghton Regis, labourer - he was at the Black Horse at Dunstable last Saturday . He had 3 sovereigns and a shilling or two in his purse. He asked for change for a sovereign which Mr[s?] Verney gave him, put it into his purse and into his pocket. He went to the Black Horse about 3pm and missed his purse at about 6pm. He told Sarah Waters he had lost his money - she did not tell him she had seen anybody take it. Sarah Waters of Dunstable, singlewoman, plaiter - she was in the tap room at the Black Horse with William Balls. A little before 6pm he pulled his purse - a red canvas one - out of his pocket and asked for change for a sovereign. he put the change into his purse and put the purse in his pocket. A few minutes later she saw the prisoner put her right hand into William Balls' pocket and take the purse away. She told Balls, but he was very tipsy.
