There was a sack in the cart a little more than half full. He locked the gates with the cart and sack in the yard. Brown slept in the house. He got up about 6am and found the gates still locked. The cart was there but the Brown and the sack were gone. The back door was open and a hurdle was standing against the wall over which Brown must have gone and taken the oats. He could see foot marks on the other side of the wall, which was between 6 and 7 feet high.
