- Scope and ContentSarah Cross of Chawston in the parish of Roxton - she bought 2 earthen pots from Joseph Whetton for 1s and gave him half a crown to change. He gave her 1s 6d. She took the pots home and found they were smaller than 2 her daughter had bought so wished to return them. She took them back to Whetton and put them in his basket. He saw her do so. She then put down 18d on the table and asked him to change the pots or give back the half crown. At first he refused to give her either. She did get the pots in the end, but never got the 18d back. Whetton took it off the table and refused to give it to her. He said she gave him the 18d - she did not, she put it on the table meaning he should give her back the half crown she had paid and she had returned the pots. She did not see Whetton take the 18d off the table, but he told her he had done so and would drink it. Joseph Whetton - had nothing to say except that Cross threw the money down on the table and gave it and he would keep it. It was spent among the company at the public house.
