    Samuel Gadsden: On 18 February he was working at Mr Hawley's in Renhold using a chad. At the end of the day he left the chad along with the rest of his tools in the drain covered by straw. He returned o 5 March to fetch his tools but the chad had gone. From information received he went with Constable Beach to William Thompson to charge him with taking the chad. Thompson said he had had the tool but returned it, leaving it in a spinney at Mr Hawley's. Gadsden searched for it and finally found it on the second attempt after hours of searching. Samuel Marshall: he saw the accused working with the chad at the end of February. The accused told him it was a stolen tool, taken from men working in a field. William Beach: when charged Thomspon told him he had taken the tool from Mr Hawley's field and had taken it back again. Beach went along with Gadsden to find it. They found it on Thursday 9 March in a spinney in Renhold.
