    John Herbert: worked at Mr Fordham's brick yard at Stotfold. On 29 April he bought a watch from George Dean, which he put in his basket in the shed at the brickyard. The watch was still there at 4pm. The accused was later left alone in the shed. At 7pm the watch was found to be missing. George Dean: sold the watch to John Herbert. He had owned it for 8 or 9 years. Following from the theft, he made enquiries and went to see Mr Dean at Baldock. Dear produced the watch he had sold to Herbert the day before. James dear: a watchmaker of Baldock. On 30 April Samuel Cox came to his shop and left the watch for repair, saying he would return in a fortnight. Later the same day, Dean came to the shop enquiring of a watch of the same description.
