  • Scope and Content
I am 50 years of age on 20 February. I was born at Cotton End in the paish of Cardington where my father William Dunton resided and belonged. When about 14 years of age I was apprenticed to James Watford of Wyboston, Eaton Socon, blacksmith for 7 years. I served him about 5 years and three quarters when my Master gave up business and he got me a place with James Pain of Oakley, blacksmith (since dead) to whom I served the remainder of the years. My Master James Watford held my Indentures until I had served the 7 years - he provided me with clothes and pocket money all the time. When 22 I married Elizabeth Clark, widow, by whom I have four children - James, Samuel, Charles and Joseph. I lived at Oakley between two and three years after I was married and then came to Bedford and hired a house in Wells Street, St Paul of Mr Mawby, afterwards Mr Palgrave and about 15 years ago of Messrs Nash & Fordham of Royston at the yearly rent of £4.4.0. About 15 or 16 years ago I was sick and was with my family removed from St Pauls to Oakley. The parish of Oakley agreed to grant me weekly relief during my sickness and i returned the next day to my house ain Bedford where I have ever since lived. About August 1822 I hired the adjoining house and also a shop of Messrs Nash & Fordham at the yearly rent of £8.10.0 added to my old rent of £4.4.0 for which I produce the receipts. I have continued to live in the 2 hses (now made into one) ever since I first took them to the present time and never underlet any of the premises.
