  • Scope and Content
Robert Scott - About 10am last Thursday he was going to Dunstable with a load of wood. Archer rode up to him on a bay gelding. After some conversation he told Archer he had an awful horse - Archer said he wanted to "chop it away" for a pony or less[er?] horse. He said he would change with Archer. The horse Archer rode had a headstall and cloth, but no saddle or bridle. Archer said he would want £7 for the exchange. He offered £2 - he valued his pony at about £4. Archer said he would rather sell outright for £10. They bargained. Archer said he wanted to feed his horse. Scott said he was going to The Crow at Dunstable and Archer might get his horse fed there. He showed Archer the Crow, then beckoned Mr Oliver the constable up the yard and continued bargaining. Archer accepted £7. He ordered the horse to be taken into the stable and told Oliver to arrest Archer on suspicion of horse stealing. Joseph Archer - would reserve what he had to say until his friends came whom he had written to.
