  • Scope and Content
William Saunders of Toddington, labourer - about 10 weeks ago he bought some ash wood for 17s at a sale of wood at Mr Osborn's. He had used part of the wood, but the remainder was in a back yard at his premises. On the morning of the 24th he missed a large piece of wood and suspected John Gobby had taken it. Knowing Gobby lodged with Franklin Harbett, who keeps a lodging house and beershop, he went there. When he got there he found John Gobby splitting up the wood he had lost, which is worth 1s. At first Gobby said the wood was Harbett's, but later he said he found it. John Gobby - said he got up very early to call a chimney sweep who lodged in Mr Baker's barn. He saw a piece of wood as he went out, and coming home he took the wood from near Mr Hobbs' gate and took it home.
