  • Scope and Content
I am about 66 years of age, was born in the parish of Souldrop where my father belonged and was Clerk of that parish for upwards of 30 years. When I was about 15 I let myself for a year to William Maxey of Knotting, farmer. At 16 I let myself to John Robins of Knotting Green, farmer for a year, the next year to William Robinson of Colworth, farmer. I then jobbed about by the week or day as labourer for about two years. When I was about 20 years of age I let myself at Bletsoe Statute about a fortnight before Michaelmas Day to George Freshwater of Thurleigh, farmer, for a year as general servant in husbandry. I went into such service at the usual time but I cannot recollect the exact day and I cannot recollect what wages I had but I know I received the whole. I was never absent from such service the whole year. I have lived a great many years in Bedford but have not done any act to hain a settlement. About 40 years ago I was married at Finedon, County of Northampton, to Mary Wightman who died a few years afterwards. By her I had two children - Elizabeth now a widow, and Thomas who has a son named William about 14 years old who has received relief from the parish of Thurleigh for many months as my grandson, the father not haveing gained a settlement in his own right. I was married at Knotting upwards of thirty years ago to Jane Harpur by whom I have not any child.
