- Scope and ContentThomas Dawson:- Master of the Ampthill Union Workhouse. Sarah Upton (wife of Samuel) and her 5 children: Mary Ann aged 11, Sophia aged 9, Charles aged 7, Harriet aged 3 and Alfred aged 1 year, They came to the Union on 13 April 1848 and remained until 12 March 1849. They were of the Shillington parish. Samuel Upton had been convicted under the Vagrant act several times for deserting his wife and children and leaving them chargeable to the parish, and twice as an incorrigible rogue. He claimed Samuel Upton to be an able bodied man, a wheelwright, and capable of earning a good livelihood.
