  • Scope and Content
He received directions from Mr John Metcalfe to watch the house of William Garratt, who had been taken on a charge of stealing apples. He heard several voices he knew, particularly the wife's - she said how [??] they had kept it about the apples. Another replied "I know he is done this time, he never will come back any more". About 10 minutes later he saw three of the prisoner's sons go into the barn. In a few minutes one came out carrying something on his back, with another walking behind him. he was not near enough to see distinctly what the boy was carrying or hear what was said. He saw them get into the hen house and heard them rustling with the straw. They left whatever they carried to the hen house there and went back to the barn with nothing. When the boys returned to the barn he saw through the cracks that they took up a sack and put it in the manger.
