- Scope and ContentSamuel Deeble: kept a confectioner shop in Potton. On the evening of Saturday 29 December, he was told his shop window had been broken and items stolen. He missed 3 cakes worth a shilling each and 4 cakes worth sixpence each. He went with Shard, the police constable, to the house of William gurney. Shard found crumbs in Gurney's pocket, but Gurney said he had no knowledge of the robbery. Gurney did later take Deeble to his house and give him back some cake he said he had taken from the shop. John Shard: went with Deeble to Gurney's house. He searched him and found crumbs of cake. On taking him into custody, Gurney told Shard he was very sorry for what he had done. He offered to show them where the cake was. It had fallen into a hog sty; Shard retrieved a piece of paper from the sty which had come off a cake.Statement of the accused - nothing to say
