- Scope and ContentJames Challis: having missed some items from his house, he asked John Thorogood, the police constable to watch the house whilst he and his family went to church. On his return Thorogood and the prisoner were in the house, and some of the missing items had been recovered. Mary Ann Challis: on returning from church with her father, Thorogood was in the house with the accused. Asked by Thorogood to check if anything was missing, she missed half a crown and six pence from her work box. The coins had been marked by Mary Ann Challis, and she was able to identify them. John Thorogood: had been left in the Challis house whilst they went to church. He heard somebody at the kitchen window, the watched the accused enter and proceed through the house, and finally exit again through the kitchen window. Thorogood, then left the house and approached him. Jackson told him he had been at the house to fetch some gunpowder. He was searched and missing items found. On being taken into custody he confessed to taking some of the items.
