Depositions and examination - Eliza Sandon charged with stealing a pair of girl's high shoes from Thomas Woodman

Thomas Woodman of Luton, shoemaker - he keeps a shoe stall in Dunstable market. He saw Sandon pass the stall several times. He had often lost shoes and suspected she intended to rob him. He got behind a cart, leaving the stall in the care of a boy whose head was down while he was eating his dinner. He saw the prisoner take a pair of girls high shoes from a line on which many pairs were hanging, put them under her arm and cover them with her arm, a cloth bundle and her shawl. She then took another pair from the line, but the boy looked up and she replaced them. She left with the first pair. When she got some distance away he called after her and accused her of stealing a pair of shoes. She denied it at first, then threw the shoes at him. The shoes are worth 2s 6d. Addendum: She did not say anything to the boy about purchasing the shoes - if she had he would have heard her. Eliza Sandon - she went to the stall and asked the boy the price. She had taken two pairs of shoes off the line, and thought she hung them both up, but one pair must have hung in her umbrella.
