Deposition of John Craker of Luton, builder - Samuel Gatward charged with felony

He was at Houghton yesterday and returned home about 8.15. he found a crowd about the house and his son told him the house had been broken open - he found all the drawers open. He had left his cash box with the key in it in a locked drawer. He believes there was about £9 of silver and 2 half sovereigns in it. When he got home the cash box was empty and the money gone. Another drawer containing a purse belonging to his wife with a sovereign, a half sovereign, a 5 shilling piece and some other silver was also broken open and they were all gone. His watch was left on the chest of drawers which contained his money box and that was also gone.
