  • Scope and Content
Samuel King, constable of Southill - on Friday 25 October Samuel Dilley brought a warrant to search for some onion seed. He went to the house of Thomas Albone at Broom with Dilley. Albone's wife and her two daughters were at home - one is named Mary and keeps company with John Bone. While they were searching the bedroom Mary Albone went up into the garrett where she sleeps. He followed and she looked very agitated. Dilley found the bag with the onion seed in one of her boxes. Further information of Samuel Dilley - he found the bag of seed at the bottom of a large bonnet box, wrapped in a frock of Mary Albone's with another frock on top of it. There is about 6 1/2 lbs of it - not the head seed. He thinks it is his seed on account of the small quantity of mould among it, and identifies the bag as his through some blood from a dead rabbit on the side and a small hole at the top. Mary Garner, spinster, housekeeper to Mr Dilley - when Mr Dilley went to London he left a sack of onion seed in the parlour. On the Tuesday John Bone came and said the seed would spoil if not moved and took it up the yard. He brought it back about 40 minutes later. Soon he brought some other seed in a measure and put it into the sack. When Dilley came home he tipped it out on the floor and she saw it was not clean as it had been before - she told him what had taken place. She knows the bag is her master's. Robert Dilley - he works for Samuel Dilley. Identifed the bag ast his master's. John Bone - when his master went to London he told him to see after his things as if he was home and if he thought the seed needed taking out to do so. He thought it was getting pretty mouldy and took it out to dry it. The bag belongs to his friends and he has had it a long time. A fortnight ago his father took it down to his brother William's with some meat in it which made the blook mark. His brother grows onion seed and sent it back with the seed in it.
