  • Scope and Content
In the summer of 1822 I was bound apprentice by my father to Joseph Potter of Canterbury, carpenter for three years. My father paid twenty or twenty five pounds as a premium on my binding. The Indentures were left in the hands of Thomas Starr an Attorney at Canterbury and I believe he still hods them. My Master was in a large way of business and I have no doubt belonged to the parish of St Alphage. I served him about nine months under my indentures when we parted. I have not since served any other Master by the consent of my Master to whom I was bound. During the nine months service under my apprenticeship I lodged at no.7 in Turn-again Lane, St Alphage. I forget the name of the person whith whom I lodged but she was once a servant (she was the housekeeper) at the Archdeacons. At the Kings Arms , Canterbury they can tell where I lodged. I left my Master on a Monday about a week after the 7th February which is my birthday. On the Friday following I was apprehended and committed for trial at the Canterbury Sessions when I was acquitted. I have never slept in Canterbury more than two nights since. I was married at St paul, Bedford to Elizabeth Gammons some time in the Spring before I was bound apprentice. I have one child a girl of the age of two years.
