  • Scope and Content
My maiden settlement was in Retford, Nottinghamshire, which I acquired by hiring and service with Mr Edward Bead of that town, carpenter. I was in his service for six years but I do not remember when I left. Married at Sheffield, Yorks, sometime in May 1817 to my husband William Durance who was then a Private in the 1st Regiment of Dragoon Guards. He obtained his discharge about a month afterwards. I have been informed he was bound apprentice by the parish of Oakham, County of Rutland to William Skillater of that place, tailor. He served under that apprenticeship until his Master failed and was then turned over to Woods of Braunston who he served a long time . He enlisted for a soldier before his term expired. After he obtained his discharge in 1817 we went to Oakham and he worked for about twelve months when some question arose about his settlement and he was examined and we were removed by an order to the parish of Braunston. Mr Bland of Oakham, cooper was then overseer of that place. The Overseer of Braunston received us and allowed us to go back to Oakham. My husband left me about a fortnight ago. He did not tell me he was going. I think he is somewhere in London, but I do not know where. I have three children by my husband, Harriet aged about six, born in St Michaels Parish, Stamford, Charles aged about 2 and a half years born at Peterborough in the Minster yard and an unbaptised daughter aged about three months born in Ship Yard, Temple Bar.
