- Scope and ContentWilliam Webb: was working for Lord de Grey felling wood in Carlton Hall wood. He saw the accused loading a cart with wood in another part of the wood. He went closer and could identify it as wood belonging to John Battams. John Tuck Battams: based on the information from Webb, he followed the men from the wood to Turvey. He saw them unload the cart at the house of a gentleman. He could see the load contained roots and underwood belonging to his father. He told them to return it to the wood, they loaded it the cart and returned some of it. He believed them to be employed to fell oak in the wood and as such, they we entitled to chips. They also confessed to him that they had taken more roots earlier that day and sold them at Turvey cottage.
