  • Scope and Content
Brian Larney of Shefford, carpenter - Harriet Finch was his house-servant, hired by the week. She had been in his service for 9 days on 20 December 1838 when she left without notice - she went out for some beer and never returned. He was engaged on the works at Wrest Park and when he returned on 21 December on information from his wife he missed some articles - 10 silver spoons, a fur tippet, a boa, a green silk gown, a chintz dress, 12 or 13 yards of black silk, a pink shawl. Several other articles were also said to be missing. He has since seen the chintz dress in the possession of a pawnbroker at Stamford. When he heard Finch had been apprehended at Stamford he went there and confronted her - she cried and apologised and hoped he "would be kind to her and not send her out of the country".She admitted sellling the spoons for 11s. Emery Smith, constable of Shefford - went with Brian Larney to Stamford to apprehend the prisoner. She said "I am very sorry for what I have done and if I once get out of this trouble I'll take care never to get into it again".
