From his mother. Seven weeks since her confinement: downstairs three times only. Mr Francklin sent “a fine fish” in honour of John V’s birthday. Mr Markham and Mr Palmer dined, Sir Philip came uninvited. “Highly blamable” of Lord Ongley to walk from Cambridge. Account of visitors “up in the nursery to ask me how I did”. Death of Master of St John’s. Joe has lost youngest boy. Mrs Payne worse. Birthday greetings. Thanks God for such a good son. Exhorts John to use his talents well. “Mind what friends you make”.
