  • Scope and Content
William Peppercorn Squire of Silsoe, farmer - has a stack of hay standing in his hay yard, partly of meadow hay, Lucern and clover. The previous day was going across his fields to the plough men and saw some hay littered. Went with his shepherd Thomas Wheeler to the stack and missed a quantity of hay. They followed the trail of hay over his fields into Mr Arnold's meadow which was in the direction of the prisoner's house at Maulden. Suspected Bryant and obtained a search warrant. Searched the premises of Sarah Cox with whom Bryant resides and found a quantity of hay in a barn or stable where a horse belonging to Bryant is kept which he identified as his. Quantity was about one hundred and a half. He knows of no other Lucern hay nearby. Sarah Cox of Maulden, widow - Bryant lives with her and pays half the rent and uses a barn as a stable. The horse was taken away yesterday afternoon by John Underwood. James Bryant - claimed to know nothing about it.
