  • Scope and Content
    Born in Marton in the County of Roxburgh in Scotland. When he was 14 he was placed as apprentice to John Ewart of Edinburgh, saddler for four years and a half by a written agreement that his father paid 30 guineas premium. He served the whole of his apprenticeship at Edinburgh with Mr Ewart. In 1810 he hired a ready furnished lodging in Charles Street, St Ann, Soho, Middlesex and continued there for three years paying 5 shillings a week. He rented a house and shop in the High Street of St Paul, Bedford from 25 March 1818 at the rent of £25 per annum besides parochial and other taxes. He was married at St Paul on 20th July 181 to Katherine Small.
