    details reference Johnson’s trust for poor of Podington – administered by Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, sent books 20 years old – publications of Christian Knowledge Society – bad paper – badly bound and injured by lying by therefore had requested him to send cheque instead. Richard had kept cheque a long time – two years since last payment to the Charity Pay Mr White for malt and hops £3.1s.10d. Cuthbert ill with heart and chest complaints proposed visit to mother in Isle of Wight they have been happy at Lymington, Country – very beautiful. “I wish you could see the precious people amongst those I am here like those who were around me at Podington”. Therefore if you do remember any of my letter to Layton yet remember also that those of whom I there spoke are chiefly those of his flock which ? have turned aside like many at Podington”. May pass through London on way to see mother – hopes may be no reason to leave Wem. Postscript asks Richard for loan of £10 inquires reference allowances for fixtures at the vicarage. Sorry to get him into trouble over letter Wednesday 31 May [1837]. Note: According to the Alumini Frederick William Hanham Layton was son of S. Layton of Wem and was curate of Wem Shropshire 1831-1835 resigned 1835 and became an Angel of the Catholic Apostolic Church, Duncan Street, Islington 1835-1878. According to Burke’s landed Gentry Cuthbert’s sister Maria Caroline married Reverend Frederick William Hanham Layton of Riverside House, Islington Middlesex.
