  • Scope and Content
Lawrence Hoare of Bridport (Dorset), girth weaver - lodged last night at the Black Horse Public House in Dunstable. He had a bundle of clothing including a pair of black cloth trousers. Robert Doyle slept in the same room. In the morning he left Doyle in bed. When Doyle came down "his person looked rather bulky". Hoare examined his bundle and discovered the trousers missing. Hoare followed Doyle, accused him of having his trousers and brought him back to the Black Horse. The police officer found the trousers "secreted on his person". The trousers are worth 7s. Robert Doyle - admitted stealing the trousers. Had never stolen before and hopes never to steal again. "I was greatly distressed at being unable to get work". He had travelled from [Birmingham?] in search of work and was going to London. A gentleman gave him 3d to pay for his lodging which was all the money he had. Robert Lees, police constable at Dunstable - found the trousers hidden under his waistcoat and the waist band of his trousers.
