  • Scope and Content
Francis Cook of Sundon, farmer - has a barn with a heap of chevalier barley in it which he had been threshing. On Sunday morning 9 December he missed about 2 to 4 bushels of the barley. Someone had got through an adjoining empty barn, pulled down part of the partition and got into the barley barn. He traced the barley along the ground, first to the road where they had spilt a peck or more, then over the next close to within 30 yards of Odell's house. Went with a search warrant and found in his backhouse about 4 bushels of chevalier barley in sacks. Odell claimed he had bought a quarter of the barley. The barley was not in ready for market as it had not been dressed. Inside Odell's house they found a fan of the type for dressing barley and 2 sieves. Charles Tomson of Sundon, farmer - was with Mr Cook when he searched Odell's house. Odell said he would be able to account for it before they left but he did not. He has no doubt it is the same as Mr Cook's barley. Edward Odell - said he could bring the man he bought the barley from, but would not say the man's name.
