  • Scope and Content
His servant said only three sacks of coal had been emptied, while Mr Laurence's waggoner (Mansfield) said he had "shot" four of the 40 sacks he had brought. The coals in the heap were weighed and were 41lbs short of 3 sacks. He insisted he had shot the fourth sack down. Chase asked what he had done with the empty sack in the wagon, but he insisted there was no empty sack, only, one half full of provender in the right hand side of the waggon. Chase's servant said there had been an empty sack on the left hand side, and pointed out a dry patch there while the rest of the wagon was wet from the rain. Mr Laurence's traveller was sent for and 40 empty sacks were counted. Edward Mansfield - said he had not stopped anywhere on the road before he got to Mr Chase's.
