- Scope and ContentJames Walduck: on 26 October 1848 he found 3 and a half pounds of cheese missing from his shop. The same night this was returned by Joseph Welch, who had found it in the loft of his public house. Jospeh Welch: went into the loft of the public house where George and John Smith had been sleeping. He found a quantity of cheese which he believed they may not have come by honestly. Welch questioned John Smith who confessed he had taken the cheese from the grocer shop near the blacksmiths. George Smith confirmed he had taken one cheese and his brother the other. John Millard, police constable: George Smith told Millard, that he had taken the cheese on the same night as the bread. John Smith confirmed this and said that although they had some money, they wished to save it to buy clothes with.
