Depositions of John Hyde, green grocer, Sarah Smith, and Abraham Fountaine, carpenter, all of Luton in the case of William Flitton for stealing apples.

John Hyde: whilst at the Pheasant beer shop in High Town, Luton, John Hyde left his greengrocery barrow at the door. This included a hamper of apples. The landlady, Mrs Wiltshire, advised John Hyde that Sarah Smith had seen William Flitton take the apples. On the arrival of Abraham Fountaine, police constable, Flitton admitted to taking 7 apples and said he'd pay for them tomorrow if he was let go. Sarah Smith: saw John Hyde enter the Pheasant beer shop and leave his barrow at the door. She saw William Flitton come out of the public house and move the barrow to the gateway, and fill his pockets with apples. He returned the barrow. She advised the landlady, who in turn advised John Hyde. Flitton entered entered the house and was asked by Hyde for the apples. Flitton denied having them. On arrival of Abraham Fountaine, he said he'd taken 7 apples and would pay for them tomorrow. Abraham Foutaine: on arriving at the Pheasant beer shop, John Hyde put William Flitton into his charge. Hyde said Flitton had robbed his barrow. Sarah Smith had witnessed this. Flitton admited to taking 7 apples and said he would give Hyde 5 or 10 shilling and return the apples if he dropped the charge. Hyde did not agree and Flitton was taken to the cage.
