  • Scope and Content
Transcript letter from Joseph Harrison to James Lightboun I reced yours and as Security for the rent do propose Mr Joshua Wheeler of Cranfield to be bound in a bond for performance of Covenants. I think you can have no better security. I suppose you expect the condicon for payment of rent distinct & express & the other general. I shall say no more than this. He is a young man & has now abt £120 per annum of his own freehold estate & will have more after the death of his Mother so leave the rest to your inquiry he would have me bound with him but I don’t care for any such thing but rather than that shall make a difference I will do it. As to keeping a flock of 120 Sheep I find by the Custom of the field the usual way is to keep one Sheep for one acre of Land but I think such a Covenant will be intirely needless for they are fully resolved to keep as many Sheep as they can as well for their own benefitt as yours and as I am sure there is nothing designed by Mrs Stratton but what is Strictly Honest I don’t doubt but you will be satisfied in your rent. As to the Straw it shall be spent on the premisses as agreed. I did not menton taxes in my last because I thought it needless for had I drew a draft of a Lease I should have taken care of that. As to the time of entering If you think proper Lady day upon the fallow & meadow. I Suppose Gurrey intends to keep the House & pasture till Michas next. Mrs Stratton will want Stable Room for Horses and as you say One barn may be spared lett it be so paying consideracon as they can agree. As to repairs you know you must first make the premisses wind & water tight & the tent is to keep them so you allowing a Sufft quantity or rough timber. Fire Storms tempests & accidents of God fall to your Share. I beg the favour of you if you like Security proposed which I think you can’t refuse you will Lend me instrucions for a Lease as you think proper for both parties. I only tell you this by the way Gurrey is Lopping every tree abt the premisses & spares none so thick as ones finger. I humbly beg your pardon for writeing in such hast but I could not help it
