- Scope and ContentDear Sir, I am in receipt of your letter of yesterday's date. I note your last paragraph in which you refer to my loss of the pair of shoes. You seem to be off the mark with your reference to insurance. All the insurance in the world will not return my pair of shoes. Had such a theft occurred in my office, I should have held a court martial. Insurance induces too easy a frame of mind an establishes a low moral order. The circumstances in which these shoes were stolen are, in my opinion, remarkable. I boarded the Arcadia at 11.30pm and put my shoes out for cleaning as I wanted them first thing in the morning. When the steward came on duty at 7 o'clock the following morning, they were gone. The ship was as quiet as a grave and there was no one about and being on B Deck it was not on a through route anywhere. One further thing, I did not seek this certificate from the Purser and I am well aware of the conditions of the passage ticket. I must, therefore, leave the matter there. Yours truly
